Cabin Retreat

Last weekend we headed back up to Gatlinburg and spent the whole weekend just hanging out with Justin's parents. It was so much fun to have quality family time, especially for Jonah! His grandparents SPOILED him!

Here are just a few quick photos to show what fun we had.

Chick-Fil-A

I support Chick-Fil-A, and their recent announcement that they believe marriage is something between one man and one woman.

I believe marriage should be between one man and one woman because this is how the Bible says it should be. Honestly, for me, it's that simple, the Bible says so, so I honor it.
"Genesis 1:27-28 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.  And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
1 Corinthians 7:2 But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband.
Hebrews 13:4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous."
There are two things that make me really sad about this whole thing with Chick-Fil-A.

One, that all Christians are getting a bad name because there are some Christians that are mean. People, God does NOT hate gay people. They are simply sinners, LIKE ALL OF US! I sin, you sin, the only person who never sinned was Jesus. So if God hates gay people, he hates all of us... and we KNOW that is not true or He wouldn't have sent his Son to die for our sins so we could spend eternity with Him!

Two, that when other companies announce that they support gays and gay marriage that they get media attention as a good thing. Now just because a company announces they support traditional marriage, they are being chastised? What happened to free speech? When Oreo made a rainbow cookie, one of my Facebook friends said, "Seriously people, it's just a cookie." Well this time I'm saying, "Seriously people, it's just a sandwich."

Chick-Fil-A thank you for standing up for Biblical values, for not being open on Sundays (even though I usually want a chicken sandwich on Sunday...oh, the irony.), for playing Christian music in your restaurants, and thank you for standing up for marriage between one man and one woman. Romans 12:2 says, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is —his good, pleasing and perfect will." Thank you for not conforming to the pattern of this world, but for standing up for what you believe is right.

Goodwill & Dollar Store Finds

I HATE spending money... Yes, I'm one of those people who hates shopping because it means I have to get the wallet out. I even coupon, and use cloth diapers to save a little money.
Well, since I hate forking over money, I LOVE finding a good deal. So I thought I would share a few of my recent fun finds here.

My mother gave me a Novak Poppy print a while ago and I just love it. It's actually the right over my fireplace in our main living room... That's how much I love it. Anyway, I was super stoked to find not one, but two Novak poppy prints at Goodwill the other day! So for a whopping $4, I got two more lovely poppy paintings to go with my Mum's Poppy print! YAY.
One of the prints
Check out that lovely price tag! :D

My Mum's Poppy print, and my Goodwill Finds!

Also, recently I fell in love with NaptimeDiaries scripture prints, and I just had to have them.... I even had the perfect place all picked out. So I found room in our budget (okay, I just splurged a little), and bought a few. The only problem is that frames, specifically pretty white frames aren't cheap, even with a coupon! So I ran over to our local dollar store and picked up a few cheap-o frames, brought them home, spray painted them white, and volia! You can't even tell they were bought from the dollar store! (Oh, P.S. the middle frame is from Hobby Lobby, but it was broken, so they sold it to me for $3 instead of the $20 original ticket price... and I have a nice hubby, so he fixed it for me.)
I plan on adding frames and photos as the years go by...

If you would like to link up with is post, and comment below with a post about your good finds, I would be thrilled!

A Weekend Visit

My dad and brother came to visit us this past weekend. They got here Thursday in time for dinner, and left Sunday night.

We spent most of their visit in Gatlinburg just enjoying time together doing silly stuff like running from shop to shop in the rain and melting during a game of putt putt golf. There was also a lot of eating fro-yo, and playing board games. The hubby, the brother, and I went to see The Dark Night Rises on Sunday night thanks to the amazing babysitting Grandpa! It was a great visit, and I can't wait to see them again! (Sadly, I probably won't see my brother again until Christmas because he joined the Army, and will be in training for a while.)

Here are a few silly pictures from our weekend with family.

Two New Scripture Screens

Today I completed two new Scripture Screens...
One is for #shereadstruth, and the other was my first request!

I hope you enjoy!

#shereadstruth

Requested by Anonymous.
Remember, if there is a verse you are trying to memorize, or just close to your heart, I'd be happy to make you a screen! Just comment below or email me the scripture! All of the other Screens I made are on their own page here.

God Bless!

Scripture Screens

For those of you who haven't been reading for a while, I recently learned that I can memorize scripture (YAY!) with the help of a scripture lock screen on my iPhone. I got this idea from shereadstruth.com.

Well, last week #shereadstruth asked people to make their own lock screen and share it with everyone. I loved this idea, and jumped on it. See my screen here. Then a couple days ago I found out that not only did people like the screen I made, they were using it! I could not have been more thrilled! I'm so honored, and blessed that God would use me in this way! To move on with my little story... Sunday night the hubby asked if I could make him a screen for his phone too! Seriously people, God is just blessing my socks off!

So at his request, I made him Psalm 15. (He loves black, brown, and beige... thus the color choice.)
The Hubs has a droid, so that is why it's a little too skinny for an iPhone.

I couldn't stand to leave the colors that way, so I also made this one too:
This one should be all set for an iPhone!

I have decided to dedicate a page on my blog I'm calling Scripture Screens to these lock screen/backgrounds, so if you have a verse that you'd like to memorize, or is close to your heart, I'd love to make you one! Just post the verse you want in a comment below, and I will do my best.

Silly Weekend Fun

Our weekend was full of laughter... My Jonah Bear was super giggly, and the hubby said something I found hilarious.

First the hubby. So after Jonah is down for the night Justin and I usually play board or card game. Last weekend it happened to be one of Justin's favorite games: Monopoly. He was winning, and I was pouting... (we are both very competitive); anyway, I made the comment that my "Monopoly life was sucking" and that we should play the board game Life next. Now Justin HATES that game, and we had some funny banter back and forth about real life and the board game Life. I ended up in tears and out of breath laughing at my husband after he finished the discussion with something along the lines of, "The game Life is nothing like real life, I don't spend my time driving around in a tiny blue car..." Y'all, he drives a '96 BLUE FORD TAURUS to work everyday. I just about died. So funny.... or maybe you had to be there.... oh well.

Now the Jonah Bear. I just had to share some of this cuteness with y'all (& the grandmas...)

Hope this adds a few smiles... or laughs to your day!

Reading God's Word...Daily

As you can tell from my recent 'about me' page update (I added my testimony of coming to Christ), God has been doing a lot in my life recently, and as a result a lot will be changing here at The Modern Housewife. I truly believe it will be for the better, and I hope you will think so too.

Don't worry, there will still be plenty of posts about my family, our happenings, and my sweet little man; but God has placed on my heart a very real need to write about Him. What He's doing in my life, things He's dropped in my heart, etc.

So every Friday I will be sharing a bit of my heart with you all. I'm calling it Faith Friday.
_______________________________________________________________________________

Today I would like to share about #shereadstruth. Yes, I've written about this amazing community of women before, but then I was just telling you of them... Now I'd want to share how this has impacted my life.

It all started out with twitter when I discovered this cute little hash tag: #shereadstruth. I looked into it, and it turned out to be a couple bloggers who were reading a YouVersion Bible plan together... It was the plan Soul Detox. It intrigued me to be held accountable to reading my Bible daily by a bunch of other women. So I joined up thinking it would just be fun. It was fun, but it turned into so much more.

A couple days after I joined they launched a website shereadstruth.com and my experience became so much more than just being held accountable. I was able to ask for prayer, I could ask questions about God's Word, I could share things God was showing me; And I could reply to others doing the same thing. The deeper I dove into the Word, the more my relationship with God became deeper as well... And it still is. I've done Bible studies before, heck, I've read the whole Bible in a year before, so I know all about reading it daily. But there is a difference between reading daily and READING DAILY.

Photo from shereadstruth.com
Soon they challenged us to memorize scripture (If you know me, you know memorization is NOT a strong gifting of mine.). I figured I could try... What's the worst that could happen? But a funny thing happened... I put the scripture on my iPhone lock screen, and every time I saw the pretty background I would take a second to read it. Inadvertently I memorized my first verse in years... Deuteronomy 7:6.

That alone I would consider a miracle... But something even more amazing happened... Jonah Bear would hear me muttering the verse to myself, and would laugh at me, so I would do it again, and again (anything to make your baby giggle, right?). Now Jo and I have turned memorizing scripture into a game! I pray that even though he is so young it will be buried into his heart as it is mine.

I have now memorized three Bible verses (Deut 7:6, Eph. 4:29, and Romans 4:20-21), and I just started my 3rd Bible reading plan with #shereadstruth.

I am amazed at the things God has been doing in my life from these two things being added to my day. I have more patience with my son and husband, I have an unexplainable peace when things dont go well, and I have thing new, strong desire to be more like Christ... Just to name a few. I can't wait to see what else my Savior has in store for me next!

I challenge you to start reading His word daily... Really digging deep into the Bible, and maybe memorize a scripture or two, and see what God will do in your life. I'd love to hear about it when you do!

***Post Edit: This morning when I woke up I saw on the #shereadstruth website that they are adding something neat! #sheshares Every Friday people can link up with their site and share what God has been doing in their lives... So, I did. You can check out other peoples stories here.

My Testimony

Recently I have felt led (in more ways than one) to post my testimony on my blog. So I have added my testimony to my "about me" page.

If you have a second, I would be blessed if you would read it.

Love you all!

7 Months

Jonah Bear is 7 months old!
Jonah is is the 25% percentile for his weight. My little chunker is about 17 pounds! He acutally gained one whole pound on the cruise... I guess adults aren't the only ones who gain weight on cruises!

Cloth diapers are still lovely! There will be a post coming soon about cloth diapering with a solid food eater.

JONAH SLEEPS THOUGH THE NIGHT!!! Ah! It is such a blessing! Now Jonah and I made a deal that once he started sleeping through the night it was OK for me to freeze time... anyone know how to do that?
Playing with Pooh Bear during his "photo shoot." It's tough to get him to  look at the camera with such a fun toy next to him!
About two days after he turned 6 months, we made the difficult decision to stop breastfeed entirely. The little breast milk he was eating with formula was making his whole tummy upset and he would spit up most of his feeding. So now my little man drinks 6 ounces of formula three times a day, and right afterward he eats about 4 ounces of baby food. Then right before bedtime (8pm) he gets one more bottle of about 6 ounces.

Jonah's milestones this past month are saying "mama," "baby," "and "poo poo." It's driving Justin nuts that he hasn't said "dada" yet. Jonah also sleeps un-swaddled and is SOOO close to crawling. The big boy LOVES playing in water, so bath time is a special favorite.

The Headboard

This weekend Justin and I made a headboard for our bedroom. We have a lovely one that my grandpa made us when we got married, but it wasn't very comfortable to lean up against and read... So we put the grandpa made one in the guestroom and we made ourselves a padded headboard. I think it turned out pretty well!

I follow a blog called Young House Love, and a few weeks ago they made a padded headboard as well, so I used what they did as a guide. Here is what we did... in pictures.
First we put the kiddo in the empty laundry basket in the bathroom... (he can't crawl yet, he just likes playing in it...)
Then Justin went out and bought  7/16  plywood that we cut  to fit our queen bed. Then Justin put duck tape around the edges so the foam wouldn't get caught on the wood. He also drilled holes in the base to secure it to the bed frame.
Next we stapled the foam around the headboard and stapled it to the back. We had to make sure that the foam was very tight.
Next we did the same thing with the fabric. Making sure it was stretched tight, and then stapling it to the plywood.
Last Justin measured out where we wanted the headboard tuffed, and put a staple in the front to "tuft" it. While he was doing that, I covered buttons in left over fabric and then hot glued them over the tuft staples.
Ta Da! Our finished headboard. Now we just need to hang pictures and we are all set!

4th of July 2012

My favorite family photo we took.
This year Justin and I were kinda bummed we couldn't go anywhere and do anything for the 4th, however, it turned out better than we could have imagined.

It started out with Justin going golfing in the morning with some friends from work. Jo and I stayed home and hung out. While the hubby was golfing I texted him and let him know if his friends were free for hot dogs and watermelon we had more than enough. So after golf the men came back for lunch. It was so nice to meet some of Justin's work friends! I truly enjoyed myself (I love meeting new people, and I love being a hostess!) and Jonah had a great time too! He really liked one of the guys because he smiled a lot. And if you know Jonah, you know that if you smile, he smiles right back. So lets just say there was a LOT of smiling going on. :D

After the guys left, Justin and I ran to Sonic real quick (happy hour!) because we are never home during the week together. It was nice to get slushes together. Then Justin just had to go buy a firework. So we did, but I made him promise to water the lawn before we set it off.

When we got home the whole family took a nap. After naptime I tortured my men and made them take family photos for about 30 minutes, but I'm thrilled with the results! We got a few cute ones!

For dinner we were kinda hot dogged out, so we did the American thing (que eye rolling) and got $1 hamburgers from Micky D's. Then Jo got a bath, and we set off the firework crazy early, like it wasn't even dark out yet, but we wanted Jo to see his first firework.... he LOVED it. I'm glad, I thought he'd be afraid of the noise.

The rest of the evening Justin and I sat on the porch and listen/watched the fireworks around us.

It was a laid back, but fun 4th.

Bedroom Updating (Still in Progress)

This past weekend Justin and I painted our bedroom, dyed our curtains, and painted our Goodwill side tables we found. It actually all turned out really nice.

Our bedroom isn't done yet, but it's good enough that I'm willing to share an awkward looking photo to show what we did.

We painted our walls gray, dyed our curtains navy blue, and spray painted the tables turquoise and the handles lime green.
I also made this little beauty. Its a wall display for our Disney pins we trade in the parks. I saw this on pinterest last week, and decided that it was something we "needed." Thus, the project.

Overall it was a VERY productive weekend.
