Coffee Date Friday: High School Memory

Well, folks, I'm trying something new today so please be patient with me.

I've decided to try Rags to Stitches Coffee Date Friday link up. It's a vlog, and I've never done one before, so I'm kinda nervous. (It's okay to laugh at me... I'm giggling though the whole video because I'm so nervous!) We were asked to talk about a high school memory.

So without futher ado, my first vlog:

Jonah's First Birthday...Party.

While we were in Gatlinburg for Thanksgiving this past weekend the family decided to celebrate Jonah's first birthday a little early. I was relieved since the next time we will all be together is Christmas. I'm sure Jonah has no idea that his first birthday is coming up, or that cake and parties are normal for a birthday; but his mama knows and I really wanted to go all out for his first birthday! So when my mom-in-law suggested we do it early, I was over the moon happy.

I made Jo a little smash cake (Justin calls it a face cake, which may be more appropriate.) in the shape of a giant basketball cupcake. The boy loves his toy basketball, and I figured he'd at least touch it 'cause it looked like his favorite toy. And the grandparents got decorations, cake, pizza, presents, and balloons! It was quite a celebration for only a week of planning.

When Jo woke from his morning nap we all ate pizza for lunch (yes, even the birthday boy). Then Jonah Bear got to try cake for the first time. It was pretty funny. He wasn't too sure at first, but then he really got into it... As in picking up the plate and shoving his face into it.
Are you sure mom?

Hey! This is pretty good stuff!

Even my hand tastes good now!

Messy Boy.

My Happy Birthday Boy
Once the mess started to get out of control (and Jo was looking a little bored), we cleaned him up, and the grandparents and great-grandparents brought out the presents. Lets just say this is a very spoiled and loved little boy.
Unwrapping gifts

Playing with his new toys!
Once Jo was happily playing with all his new toys, the adults ate their cake. You know, the un-smashed one. Then we all packed up and went to Dollywood. I was super excited about this because Jo was finally big enough to ride a few rides! Daddy had to ride them too which just made it all the more fun for me... Watching my little man, and my tall man climb into these little ducks and bees was hilarious!

We all walked around Dollywood for a while and had a good time looking at the lights. Justin even got to ride the new roller coaster.

It was a very special first birthday celebration for my Jonah Bear.

The Best Pie Crust Recipe

In November of 2009 Justin and I were celebrating our first Thanksgiving as a married couple, so when his parents invited us up to the cabin to celebrate, I was seriously relieved. After being a vegetarian for eight years the thought of making a whole turkey was truly overwhelming. That being said, I had to bring something to help out. So I volunteered to make pie. I'm pretty sure I made apple, pecan, and pumpkin. Now I had never made pie crust before, but being the new housewife that I was, I wasn't about to go out and buy pre-made crust!

Que my Martha Stewart magazine. The November issue had three different pie crust recipes, and I figured that Martha couldn't be bad. So I tried one of the recipes for all three pies. Everyone at Thanksgiving couldn't stop raving over my silly pies! Talk about an ego boost! I decided right then and there that I was never going to buy pie crust. It was too easy to make!

Sadly, in 2011 I lost my pie crust recipe. That year my pies were not as good; and no one said anything, but well, there was a lot of pie left over... Luckily as we were moving into our new house this year, I found the old Martha magazine! My husband basically informed me that I was going to blog about this pie crust so I wouldn't lose it ever again... that's how much he likes it!

So without further ado, the Martha Stewart Living November of 2009 recipe:
(In my words with my notes)

"Fall Leaves" Pate Brisee
Makes one 9 inch double crust

1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
8 ounces (2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces (cold and unsalted people!)
1/4 to 1/2 cup ice water
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Put flour, sugar, and salt in food processor and pulse to mix. Add butter, and pulse again the mixture looks like it's crummy instead of flour-y.

Drizzle about 1/4 cup water into mixture. Pulse until it starts to hold together. It shouldn't be sticky.

Divide dough in half and place each half on plastic wrap (I prefer tin foil), then wrap dough and roll it out so you create two flat disks of doughy goodness. Refrigerate until firm, or even overnight.

Uncover and roll out dough. It will be about 1/8 inch thickness and will fit into a 9 inch pie plate. (Sometimes I have to use my fingers to press the edges up a bit so it fits right.) Freeze until firm.

Bake with your pie filling.

Tada! I told you it was easy. I hope you enjoy!

Thanksgiving 2012

This was Jonah's first Thanksgiving and it was a hit.
Little man really enjoying himself.

We were blessed by Justin's parents who came down to Gatlinburg for a week, so we were able to visit them for two weekends, one of which was Thanksgiving.

I was in charge of the pies. I made apple pie, pumpkin pie, and pecan pie. I also ended up throwing together a cheese ball at the last minute. I'm always in charge of the desserts, and I love it! I'm terrified about making a turkey, and I love baking so this works out great for me. I will be posting a couple of the recipes in a day or so.

Mom and Dad ended up making enough food to feed all seven of us for days afterward! It was crazy, but so yummy. Jonah loved it too! I never gave him his baby food that meal. He ate so much other stuff. He especially enjoyed the apples from the sausage stuffing, turkey, and spiced cinnamon apple rings. The boy can certainly pack it away!
More food ma!

It was wonderful to spend so much time with family. We are so blessed.

I have been considering changing the name of my blog since just before Jonah was born. I mean once I became a mama, I wasn't just a housewife anymore.... I am a housewife, a mama, a youth leader, and who knows what else God has for me? Now that my second little guy is arriving in a few short months, and God is pressing on my heart some big ideas... I felt now was the time for change.

So, "The Modern Housewife" is making the transition to "i me megan."

Why "i me megan?" Well, when I was a very little girl (like two years old) my mum says that whenever I walked into a room of people I would yell "I me Megan, I here!" as if to let everyone know the party had arrived. So y'all...

I me Megan! I here!

I'm not one of those people who is only thankful during the holidays. I love being thankful for everyday things too!

But today, I figured I could make a short list of a few of the things I am thankful for today.

My Savior: my Jesus: my Everything
My amazing husband who spoils me.
My sweet Jonah Bear.
My little Levi. (Can't wait to meet him!)
Our wonderful extended family who came down to Tennessee so I didn't have to make a turkey!

This has been such a blessed year. I am so thankful to my God for everything!

It's wonderful to be thankful on Thanksgiving, but let's not forget to praise Him too!

Happy Thanksgiving Y'all!

Preparing for Levi

Levi Richard Biddle - November 13, 2012

I haven't actually done anything other than make a list in preparation for Levi. This amazing little boy who is getting ready to meet the world was a surprise... but a blessing none the less! It's taken me a while to get used to the idea of being a mama to TWO little guys... but it's starting to sink in (it only took 5 months...)

As things are sinking into this thick skull of mine, I'm starting to get more nervous. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not in full worry mode: my Lord has given me peace. But I guess I'm just remembering how things were when Jonah was a newborn, and I really, REALLY don't want things to be the same.

With Jo I had a full-on mama-melt down. Which ended up with a doctors visit and some drugs that thankfully I didn't have to take. It terrified me that my head was taking me back to the dark places before I met my Savior. I was so overwhelmed, sleep deprived, and well, in pain from just giving birth that I couldn't handle ANYTHING. I cried myself to sleep for a week. I really don't want to go back there with Levi. My heart starts to flutter just thinking about it.

With Jo we couldn't lay him down to sleep because he would spit up and choke. So for a couple weeks  we held him... constantly, as in 24/7. I was so afraid that something would happen to him.

With Jo, my sweet husband slept on the couch for about 3 months with Jonah in the swing so I could get some much need (or I'd have another melt-down) sleep. I felt like a bad mom and wife that my husband had to work all day and then take the night shift because I couldn't deal with sleep deprivation.

And with Jo, my milk never came in right. So I basically made skim-milk. Then as the added cherry on top it made him sick. No matter what I did to my diet he would still spit-up most of each feeding. Eventually I made the hard decision to formula feed, and my sweet little bear started to thrive.

I guess my point in bearing my heart like this is to ask for your prayers. Levi will be here in about 4 months, and I could use all the prayer I can get. Especially about breastfeeding and the meltdowns.

Will you please pray with me?

No Apologies

Again I have been MIA on my blog... Figured I could explain, and I'm sure y'all will understand.

My Jonah Bear has never been a super cuddly guy. He's a "go-go-go" type personality. If he wanted to cuddle I took him to the doctor... honestly. If he wanted to cuddle it meant he didn't feel well.

Well, since I've been pregnant Jonah Bear has turned into a cuddle bear... not sure why. Maybe he knows I'll need to be cuddling Levi soon, or maybe he has just had a change of heart, but either way. If my boy crawls onto my lap with his pacifier and teddy bear intent on cuddling with mama for a few minutes, then mama is going to cuddle.

Unfortunately this means that nap time (which used to be mama time... aka blog time) has turned into chore time. All the little things that I used to do while Jo played are now being done trying to be done during his nap.

Now don't get me wrong, this is not an apology. I will never apologize for cuddling my babies. This is more of a 'heads up',' I'm still alive' kinda post.

So if I go MIA again, you'll know I'm doing some serious cuddling.

Baby Biddle #2 is a...

Jonah is getting a brother!

Levi Richard Biddle should be born around Easter.

A Month from ONE YEAR OLD

Yep, my baby boy is 11 months old. It's kinda blowing my mind.

Jonah still weighs 21 pounds which is 40% for his age, and he is 28 inches in length which is 60% for his age! This explains why he needs special onesies...

Jonah will try anything you feed him, but he's getting a little more picky. He's a texture eater like his mama, so when Justin gave him a couple pieces of canned fruit, he popped them into his mouth, and gagged. He couldn't handle the slimy texture.

No change in his sleeping patterns... still a solid 11 hours straight at night. Happy Mama. If he wakes up a tad early (usually from Daddy leaving for work early...) he will just sit in his crib and sing waiting patiently for mama. So sweet.

Oh man, CRAWLING MACHINE! He is getting into everything! He pulls himself up constantly, and is even standing for a few seconds by himself. He knows what "No No" means, but he has chosen to ignore me a couple times. "What mama? Did you say something?" On the plus side, when he wants to cuddle, he grabs his teddy and his pacifer, and will crawl onto my lap. I love it!

Jonah hasn't really added any new words to his vocab recently, but he has started using basic sentences, and he talks in gibberish to his teddy all-the-time. His favorite thing right now is to wave to Justin and say "Hi Daddy!" If he catches me talking on the phone, he will say "Bye Bye" until I hang up, or let him talk.
Kissing Pooh Bear...

Laughing at  Daddy.

Lovin' on Pooh Bear. Look at how long he is!
